About

Built with
Intention

Montserrat Reserve is not the product of a corporate hospitality group or a real estate development company. It is a family project, born from a desire to build something honest on a piece of land that asked for care, not extraction.

01 · The Story

How This Started

The idea for Montserrat Reserve began years before any plans were drawn. It started with a question: what would it look like to live closer to the land, not as a weekend escape, but as a way of being? That question led to years of searching, visiting rural properties across Mexico, learning about regenerative agriculture, and studying the work of people who had built something similar in other parts of the world.

When we found the land near Chacahua, we knew it was right. Not because it was perfect, but because it had character. The terrain was uneven, the vegetation was dense, and the coast was close enough to hear at night. It was the kind of land that did not need to be transformed. It needed to be understood.

We spent the first year just being there. Walking the property, observing where the water collected after rain, noting which trees the birds preferred, learning the patterns of sun and shade across the seasons. Only after that period of listening did we begin to design. And even then, the design was guided more by the land than by any blueprint.

This is a family-led project in every sense. The decisions are made around a kitchen table, not in a boardroom. The vision is personal, shaped by the experience of raising a family and wanting to create a place that reflects values that matter to us: simplicity, care, and a deep respect for the natural world.

02 · The Name

Why Montserrat

The reserve is named after Montserrat. It is a personal name, not a geographic one, and it carries meaning that goes deeper than branding. Montserrat is the name of someone at the center of this family, someone whose presence shaped the kind of place we wanted to build: gentle, strong, rooted in love rather than ambition.

In Catalan, Montserrat means "serrated mountain," a reference to the jagged peaks of the Montserrat massif near Barcelona. But for us, the name carries a different weight. It represents care, tenderness, and the quiet kind of strength that holds a family together through the years of uncertainty that a project like this requires.

We chose to name the reserve after her because this place is, in a very real sense, built for her and because of her. Every decision, from the plants in the garden to the angle of the roof, reflects the values she embodies: patience, attention, and the belief that beautiful things take time.

03 · The Process

From Land to Sanctuary

01
Listen First
Before any construction began, we spent a full year observing the land. We tracked water flow during the rainy season, mapped the shade patterns throughout the day, identified the native species, and learned which areas of the property were best left untouched. This patience shaped everything that followed.
02
Design with the Terrain
The architecture follows the land rather than reshaping it. Villas are positioned where the natural clearings already existed. Paths follow the trails that feet had already worn into the earth. The pool sits in a natural depression where water collected during the rains. Nothing is forced.
03
Build by Hand
Construction is done by local craftspeople using traditional techniques adapted for modern comfort. Walls are plastered by hand. Wood is joined with care. Every material is chosen for its origin, its durability, and its relationship to the landscape it sits within.
04
Grow What We Can
The gardens were planted before the buildings were finished, because the soil needed time to develop and the trees needed time to grow. By the time guests arrive, the garden will be mature, productive, and integrated into the daily rhythm of the reserve.
